Nevern Square was named after the village of Nevern in Pembrokeshire, home of the Edwards Family and, in particular, the Victorian landowner Lord Kensington (who owned most of Earls Court at one time!). Many other streets such as Philbeach, Trebovir and Penywern in Earls Court can also be seen on a map of Pembrokeshire. Built between 1880 and 1886 by Robert and George Whitaker, the style of construction was known as the new ‘domestic revival’, and controversially contrasted to the surrounding white stucco streets. Like Bramham or Barkston Gardens, the red brick style architecture gives this square a darker, warmer feel; but unlike those two other squares, the garden’s minimalist landscaping makes sure it’s still bright throughout the year too. The magnificent 7 mature plain trees planted back in 1882 are still growing strong today!
Back at the turn of the century, one could buy a full Freehold house in this beautiful garden square for £2,200 and get 5,000 sq ft of internal space! You could rent one for only £150/year! We found this original sales/lettings brochure of Nevern Square from 1880 at the Kensington and Chelsea town hall archives.

The communal garden is almost tropical with a dense tapestry of tall plane trees; which does make it dark at times but also gives it a magical privacy, as if you were suddenly in a fairy tale forest. There’s a wonderful children’s playground here too.
